10 Beach Vacations To Experience This Summer

Sea stacks shoot out of the sea and waves crash on beaches made for tide-poolers and beachcombers. It’s a windswept coastline at its best, but it gets better. It’s at the foot of one of the U.S.’s only old-growth rainforests, glaciated mountain peaks, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails in Olympic National Park. The whimsical Domaine Madeline in Port Angeles is at the gateway to the park yet tucked away on a seaside bluff. Enjoy breakfast on your patio then take a drive up to Hurricane Ridge for views over the San Juan Islands and hikes for every level.

This skinny island, just a ferry ride from busy Nassau, is fringed by 135 beaches—in white and pink sand. Nary a stoplight or chain restaurant, this is the Bahamas at its most idyllic. Stay at the north end of the island with a beachfront villa at The Cove. Forget what you think you know about the “Jersey Shore.” This historic seaside village at the tip of the Cape May peninsula is pure charm. Known as one of the Caribbean’s best sea turtle nesting beaches, the island welcomes tens of thousands of mamas and babies to its shores each summer. Choose the luxurious and adventure-savvy Tortuga Lodge, where massive green iguanas stroll around the chic cabanas and spider monkeys swing from the trees outside your room. For added romance, the lodge can arrange a private boat ride and dinner on a secluded riverbank before a guided stroll with the sea turtles.

Drive north of Sonoma wine country along the legendary Pacific Coast Highway, and you’ll find dramatic sea cliffs, redwood forests, Victorian houses, and a vibrant art scene in this laid-back beach town. The historic Stanford Inn by the Sea is perfectly situated at the edge of town and the mouth of the river. Rent a hand-carved redwood canoe and paddle upstream to watch the resident sea lion colony at play. One of Maine’s most picturesque towns is also the gateway to the only national park along the Atlantic Ocean, Acadia.
