Our Hometowns: A local's guide to Budapest, Hungary

Find out local tips about what to eat, drink and do, plus where to sleep, with this local's guide about the Hungarian capital.

As a trivago Magazine reader, you probably already know our “Hometowns” series, where we take you to explore cities around the globe like a local, with exclusive tips from trivago talents (we have travelers from around 90 nationalities working in the company!). If you are dreaming about a first (or second, or seventh) trip to Eastern Europe, this article is for you. Bettina will take you through her hometown: the historic and vibrant Budapest.

The city is Hungary’s capital, a country famous for being the land of thermal springs and having more than 1500 spas. It’s also home to some cool inventions, like the color TV and escape rooms (who knew?). This inventive spirit spreads to the delicious cuisine, picturesque bars and unique architecture of Budapest.

Ready to discover with Betty the best spots in the city, including some family-friendly places? Let’s go!

Bettina Jakobsen

A Country Manager here at trivago, Bettina is from Budapest, Hungary. She knows every corner of the city - not only because it is her hometown, but also because she worked as a tour guide there. Even though Betty is living abroad for many years, she still loves to take friends to Budapest and show them the unique side of the city.

The Aria hotel is an unique luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Budapest, next to the St. Stephen’s Basilica. The design of the hotel is inspired by music, with four wings based on different styles: classical music, opera, jazz and contemporary music. Among the designs, you find references from legends like Mozart, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, and even the Hungarian Ferenc Liszt.

The hotel also has a rooftop bar called High Note bar, which offers an amazing panorama to the city.  Every afternoon you can enjoy live music, while tasting wine and cheese. Aria also has a very nice luxury wellness area, the Harmony spa, with a pool, jacuzzi, sauna and a gym.
