6 Romantic Destinations in Oklahoma: Offering Much More than Expected

Escape to the remote isolation of the prairie or immerse yourself in urban nightlife while experiencing these romantic getaways in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma may not be one of the first places you think of when pondering a romantic getaway, but it definitely should be.

For those who find romance in wide open spaces, the fresh breeze off of one of America’s great landscapes and the lore of indigenous cultures, Oklahoma is a destination that will speak to your heart.

The prairie invokes the certain romance of wild nature, just like in Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s classic 1992 movie, “Far and Away.” Their story could have been that of my Irish ancestors – the reason why these wide open prairies will always hold a special place in my heart. Enjoy your own romantic getaway at one of these six lovey-dovey destinations in the Sooner State and maybe it will in yours too.

A Romantic Getaway in Norman, Oklahoma

Most people know Norman as the home of the University of Oklahoma. While the ‘Sooners generate much of the energy in Norman, it is possible to escape to a romantic getaway in the area at The Montford Inn.

This elegant property was custom built in the 1990s to be exactly what it is – a luxurious boutique hotel. Since then, the Montford has won dozens of awards for service, dining and romance. With just six cottages and nine suites, you’ll not feel crowded here, even during an OU football weekend.

Relax with a glass of lemonade in a rocking chair on the massive front porch, or enjoy an intimate glass of wine on your private patio. For the ultimate in relaxation, ask for an in-room couples massage for two in front of your very own fireplace.

Located 20 miles south of Oklahoma City, you will find a wide selection of restaurants and activities in the area to meet your particular needs.

A Romantic Getaway in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Located in the upscale Nichol Hills neighborhood of OKC, the Renaissance Waterford Hotel is everything you’d expect from a Marriott property, plus a little more.

As a popular wedding destination, the garden grounds are lovely for a stroll no matter where you are in your relationship. Fresh flowers are a mainstay in your room and throughout the public areas of this hotel, as is lots of locally inspired and created art adorning the walls.

I love relaxing by an outdoor pool and my husband enjoys a sauna, so the Ren is a great fit for our relationship. Free Wi-Fi is also available only for posting your best photos to social media.

If you don’t care to leave the property, you will enjoy a steak dinner at the Ember Restaurant. Room service is also an option. However, if you are up for a short walk and craving Italian, Bellini’s Ristorante is about two blocks away. For something special, consider dinner at Castle Falls – widely recognized as one of the most romantic restaurants in the U.S. Plan ahead and make reservations.

For a can’t miss activity during your romantic weekend, make sure to visit the rose gardens at Will Rogers Garden.

A Romantic Getaway in Grand Lake o' the Cherokee, Afton, Oklahoma

Those who imagine Oklahoma to be a windswept prairie should plan a trip to the verdant northeast part of the state. This is the Cherokee Nation – thus, the man-made lake here is known as the Grand Lake o’ the Cherokee. While there are lots of cabins and mom-and-pop resorts around the lake, the most comprehensive for romance and activity is the Shangria La Resort near Afton.

One of the many highlights of this resort is that it is located on a private island in the middle of the lake – how romantic is that!

However you define a romantic getaway, you’ll find it here – including a spa, golf, fine dining and lake cruises. Rent a pontoon on the lake for the afternoon with a bottle of wine, or take a dinner cruise on the paddle wheeler Cherokee Queen. Personally, we enjoyed the adult beverages available at the pool bar and your own private cabana.

Note that the Summit Restaurant is open for dinner between Thursday – Saturday only. Plan ahead to enjoy a sunset view of the lake accompanied by a selection from the largest wine cellar in Oklahoma.

A Romantic Getaway in Tulsa, Oklahoma

A combination of history and elegance, The Ambassador Hotel in Tulsa was the founding member of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. The building was first constructed in 1929 as a hotel for the wealthy oil tycoons moving to Tulsa. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

With a cheerful color scheme that combines light silver and brilliant yellow, each of the 55 guest rooms offers generous windows for natural light, plush bedding and an LCD TV.

Enjoy the historic architecture, original artwork, and of course, superb service. Relax with a day at the spa or explore Tulsa on the bicycles available at no charge to guests.

A visit to the Tulsa Botanic Gardens, especially at Christmas, practically requires hand holding and is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful conversation.

Dining out in Tulsa offers numerous choices for steakhouses. No one can agree which is best, but you won’t go wrong with Prhyme downtown or the Bluestone Steak House and Seafood.

An Architectural Masterpiece in Bartlesville, Oklahoma

Fans of Frank Lloyd Wright will be thrilled to spend a memorable weekend at the Inn at Price Tower in Bartlesville. Constructed in the 1950s, Wright dubbed the 19-story office/apartment building “the tree that escaped a crowded forest.”

In 2003, after a major remodel, the top seven floors became hotel space with an art center below. The entire building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and guided tours are available. The renovated space now includes 19 guest rooms and three suites, with wrap around windows providing spectacular views of the city and Oklahoma prairie beyond.

Floors 15 and 16 are now The Copper Bar, where lunch and dinner are served to the accompaniment of live musicians. If the weather is nice, eat on the balcony.
