Panama City: What to See and Where to Stay

Panama City

Panama City

Located in Central America at the Pacific entrance of the world-famous Panama Canal, Panama City is the fourth stop on the trivago WorldTrip.  The city follows the European dream cities of London, Rome, and Barcelona on the world tour, but the city is a global powerhouse of its own kind.  If the word Panama conjures up images of hats and canals in your mind, then you have not been paying attention to Latin America’s fastest growing and most exciting capital city in recent years.

Panama City is a city of contrasts, with its dense skyline of high-rise luxury buildings, lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and UNESCO World Heritage sites.  It is a perfect destination for the young and old, singles and newlyweds, and beach and city-lovers.  Panama City and its surrounding area offers tourists a wide range of activities from hiking to shopping to snorkeling to surfing.  Here are a few of our favorites:

1.  Casco Viejo.  Spanish for Old Town, Casco Viejo is the historic district and is also referred to as Casco Antiguo or San Felipe.  It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997.

2.  The Panama Canal.  View the man-made 77 km (48 mile) Panama Canal,  which changed the course of shipping and travel by connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

3.  Natural Metropolitan Park.  Panama City is a cosmopolitan city, but just 10 minutes of the city resides a lush tropical rainforest.  It is the only metropolis that boasts a tropical rainforest within its city limits.

4.  Bocas del Toro.  Beach lovers will rejoice in the soft sands while snorkelers will delight in the rich display of coral and the hordes of fish that surround the coral.

5.  Las Perlas Archipelago.  This gorgeous white-sand destination makes it a great day from Panama City.  Snorkel and swim in the calm waters, or just relax and enjoy the view from the land.

As tourism in Panama City has surged over the past few years, there are plenty of hotels in this cosmopolitan city.  However, there is one hotel that stands out from all the rest.
