Every year, for two weeks at the end of June, the world’s greatest tennis players converge on a leafy suburb of West London to play in the oldest and most prestigious lawn tennis tournament: Wimbledon. The Pimms flow, 28,000 kg (roughly 62,000 pounds) of strawberries and cream are consumed and celebrities of all manner come to watch from the Royal Box, it’s the epitome of British Summer.
Whether you’ve been playing all your life or just enjoy the occasional volley with a friend, we serve up the best hotels to have your own Centre Court moment at one of these US tennis resorts.
Fisher Island Club | Miami
Playing Tennis at the Fisher Island Club is probably the closest to playing at Wimbledon you can get when in the US. You’ll be spoiled for choice with 18 tennis courts and three types of surfaces to choose from, including the newly refurbished Deco Turf used at the US Open. There is even a Centre Court with a stepped up viewing area so that you can feel like a real tennis star. Time your visit well and you may bump into tennis greats such as Andy Roddick, who come to the resort for pretournament practice.
Mohonk Mountain House Resort | New York
The Mohonk Mountain House is a Victorian Castle on the banks of Lake Mohonk in the Hudson Valley. The first courts were built here in 1883 not long after the All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon was founded in 1868. With an excellent array of programmed tennis, this is the perfect club to experience tennis in a traditional setting.
For the Aspiring Professional
The Sanctuary Hotel at the Kiawah Island Tennis Resort | South Carolina
If you’re looking to up your game then a stay at the Kiawah Island Resort could really make the difference. There are 24 courts to choose from and the instructional clinics and camps are all under the direction of Roy Barth, the director of tennis at Kiawah for over 35 years and founding member of the ATP Tour. It’s Game, Set, Match.
The Broadmoor | Colorado Springs
Summer in England is a bit like Christmas. It’s mostly cold and there’s a fair amount of build-up but it tends to only last one day. So, in 2009, a retractable roof was installed on the Centre Court at Wimbledon so that play can resume even in the rain! If you’re looking for a tennis center with similar seasonal facilities then look no further than The Broadmoor where two of the courts are covered by an illuminated heated bubble during the winter months.
The Junior Title
The Sun Valley | Idaho
Offering both adult and junior day clinics and camps, The Sun Valley is one of the top 50 tennis resorts in the country and one of the finest high altitude training centers. Their social calendar is brimming with tournaments, socials and round robins for all the family. Be sure to bring your best tennis attire as there is a strict dress code, although color is permitted – unlike at Wimbledon where there’s an “Almost entirely in White” rule.
